Trying one out before you commit
Most of this category is sold by demo — a scheduled call where somebody shows you their product working perfectly on a script they wrote. That tells you almost nothing about how it behaves on your calls, and there is a much better way to spend the same half hour.
Why the demo misleads
Not through dishonesty, usually. It is that a demo is run by somebody who knows exactly which questions work, on a configuration built for showing, with no real customer on the line. Every product in this category demos well, which means the demo cannot distinguish between them — it is the one part of the evaluation that carries no information.
What to do instead
With a question a real customer asks, not one from their script.
An edge case, a mumbled sentence, a service you do not offer. What happens at the edges is what you will live with.
Then open your own calendar and confirm it landed, on the right person, with the details attached.
Plenty of products book and cannot unbook. Finding out now costs you nothing.
What a fair trial lets you do
Use it on real calls, for long enough to see a full week including a weekend, without a salesperson mediating. If a provider will only let you evaluate under supervision, that is itself the answer. And a trial that requires a conversation to cancel is not a trial — it is a contract with a grace period, and the difference shows up when you try to leave.
The terms worth reading before you start
How much notice cancelling needs, whether there is a minimum term, what happens to a number they provided, and whether your data leaves with you. None of these matter while things are going well, and all of them matter in the month you decide to stop. A provider confident in the product does not need to lock you in for a year.
